Major Discovery! 7 Earth-Size Alien Planets Circle Nearby Star

Latest News, Science, Space
Astronomers have never seen anything like this before: Seven Earth-size alien worlds orbit the same tiny, dim star, and all of them may be capable of supporting life as we know it, a new study reports. "Looking for life elsewhere, this system is probably our best bet as of today," study co-author Brice-Olivier Demory, a professor at the Center for Space and Habitability at the University of Bern in Switzerland, said in a statement. The exoplanets circle the star TRAPPIST-1, which lies just 39 light-years from Earth — a mere stone's throw in the cosmic scheme of things. So speculation about the alien worlds' life-hosting potential should soon be informed by hard data, study team members said. Earth May Be Sending Oxygen To The Moon

New Delhi: Scientists have found that oxygen ions from Earth's atmosphere are transported to the Moon, which they believe may be for about 2.4 billion years. Researchers found that Japan's SELENE lunar orbiter (aka Kaguya), detected high levels of oxygen ions – positively charged oxygen molecules – while it was orbiting the Moon between 2007 and 2009. Analysing data from Japanese lunar orbiter Kaguya, researchers suggest that this oxygen exchange occurs when Earth's protective magnetosphere passes over the Moon. This shielded the Moon from the blast of the Sun's solar wind and while allowing a stream of positively charged oxygen molecules from Earth to travel to the lunar surface instead. "Our new finding suggests that the Earth-Moon system coevolves not only physically but also c

NASA teams up with ESA to send humans to Moon by 2021

Space, Technology
The European Space Agency (ESA) and aerospace company Airbus have agreed with NASA to build a module for a second, manned mission that will fly around the moon as early as 2021, which will be launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. ESA and Airbus had already delivered a propulsion and supply module for an unmanned flight of NASA's new Orion spacecraft next year. Mankind hadn't gone beyond a low orbit around Earth since 1972, when NASA ended its Apollo program. The manned Orion mission will take humans to the moon for the first time in 50 years. NASA's Orion capsule is also aimed at taking astronauts to Mars and asteroids in the following years. NASA said Orion will carry astronauts into deep space and then return them home to Earth. Crew size and composition of t...

Where to see ‘The Great American Eclipse’ of 2017

Environment, Latest News, Mainstream Headline News, Space
On Aug. 21, a total solar eclipse will be visible from the United States for the first time since 1979. Sky watchers in North America and Hawaii will be able to see at least a partial solar eclipse on that summer day, but most people will have to travel to see the sun completely eclipsed by the moon. If you're considering making a trip to see the total solar eclipse, here's a guide to which states and cities fall inside the path. On that third Monday in August, the sun will appear to be partially obscured by the moon to viewers across all of North America and in Hawaii. Just how much of the sun will be eclipsed by the moon will depend on where you're observing from. For most people in the U.S., the moon will appear to cover at least two-thirds of the sun and in many locations it will...

Nearly 13 million pages of declassified documents from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have been released online. In all, more than 12 million documents are accessible, covering the history of the CIA from its creation in the 1940s up to the 1990s – with intelligence officials giving assurances that the half-century of data is in its entirety, with nothing removed.
