The terror threat level in the UK has been downgraded from critical to severe which means an attack is now ‘highly likely’, instead of ‘imminent’ . The Prime Minister Theresa May announced the change in the threat level during a short statement just before midday.   The terror threat grading was introduced by security chiefs in August 2006 and is set by MI5. However,the PM said Operation Temperer, which allows the military to be deployed to key sites, will continue until the end of the bank holiday when the soldiers will return to barracks.

From this afternoon (25/5), specially trained firearms officers will be patrolling on board train services  for the first time. This mobilisation is part of BTP’s plan to ensure that travelling public are kept safe on the rail network. Passengers who regularly use train services may see a firearms presence on their trains whilst the country is at a critical threat level. Armed officers have been regularly patrolling on the London Underground since December, but this will be the first time they will patrol on board train services elsewhere in the country.
