Severe damage to Interstate 20 was caused by a crew from Atlanta Gas Light Company as they were doing maintenance on an older pipe that ran underneath the highway.
Only one injury occurred due to this event, Witnesses say the motorcyclist was thrown 10 to 15 feet in the air when the pavement began to crack and buckle upwards.
All lanes of I-20 westbound were shut down after the crash as crews investigated what caused the road to buckle. Crews quickly began repairs to the roadway.
The Georgia Department of Transportation reopened two lanes Monday afternoon, but said all lanes will not be open until at least noon on Tuesday.
GDOT crews worked overnight to repair the road and all four lanes are currently open several hours ahead of schedule.
